1. Initialising the calculator
To initialise your calculator to the default course settings, turn it on and enter the two key sequences:
(CLR) (Setup) (Yes)
(SETUP)
(Norm)
It is important to note that in the initial key sequence, "CLR" (which is short for 'clear') is the second purpose in the
key, and 'Setup' is what is the title of the on-screen menu item that is associated with this
number. "Yes" is the name of the menu item on screen in relation to key
button. The key sequence is able to clear all settings previously set up in the calculator.

Your calculator will now operate in Math mode as well as the term Math will be displayed near the right-hand top of the calculator display as shown in Figure 4. Math mode is the recommended method to use your calculator during this course because it allows mathematics to be filled in and displayed in a like way as you write it on paper.Figure 4 Math mode
1.1 Basic calculations
Fundamental calculations are entered to the calculator in exactly the same sequence as when they are written on paper. This is demonstrated in the following exercise. The calculator displays the calculation that you enter. When you click
the button, the answer appears at the bottom right side of the screen.

It is possible that in the first part (4) from the previous task this calculation was too long to fit on the calculator display. When this happens the symbols '
' or '
' are displayed to the left or right side of the display , indicating that there's more data in the direction of. This information can be viewed by scrolling left and right using keypads

If you are typing a lengthy calculation inside your calculator or calculator, you might be able to observe that the cursor (which is usually displayed by the letters '

'. This means you're allowed to type only 10 additional characters. If you run into this then you must break the calculation into smaller pieces.
The cursor will flash a symbol indicating where the next entry within the calculator will be displayed.
1.2 Decimals or fractions?
When you are in Activity 1 you set up your calculator to operate in Math mode. In this mode, when the outcome of an calculation does not represent a complete number, it will be displayed as a fraction, like

To get the answer in decimal form, you'll need be pressing

Remember, this is the time to make sure that your calculator has entered Math mode if Math is displayed at the center of the calculator display. If your calculator isn't working in Math mode, follow the steps of Activity 1.

1.3 Powers
There are a variety of keys on the calculator that enable you to perform calculations which require powers. For smaller powers like squares or cubes there are designated buttons

those are situated in the function area of the keypad. These are operated in a similar manner to how you would write mathematics in the past, for example, to enter,

. The display also displays the math in the exact way as you would write it on paper.
To calculate higher powers such as
, you need to make use of the more general Power key

. Note that after you press the
key there is a small circle shown at the top of the calculator display with a flashing cursor ('
') that allows users to input the key into the right spot. If you want to drag the cursor from this box and return to the main line of the display when the power is entered you need to press the right arrow key
at the right-hand part of the big cursor button.Figure 5 shows the general function of the power key

1.4 Making corrections
If you've made mistake while entering a key sequence into the calculator If you make a mistake, you can use the editing facilities to correct your error.
Keys

In these instances, a "Syntax Error' screen will appear such as in Figure. The Syntax Error screen will give you two options:

Other kinds of calculator error that you could run into include:
- 'Math Error', when the calculation you entered makes mathematical sense but the result is not able to be calculated, like trying the division of zero or if the calculation is too large to the calculator to process.
- 'Stack Error', when you're calculation is too complex to be completed in all at once - in these situations, try breaking the calculation into a series of smaller ones.
The section 4 discusses ways that you might do this.
In these situations, the calculator will show a screen similar to that for the Syntax Error, allowing you to decide whether to correct or abstain from your calculation.
